While preaching on Pentecost Sunday, I said, “I (sometimes) wonder if the Holy Spirit is here or not.” Immediately, as if on cue, thunder boomed in the approaching storm outside. I don’t think it was a coincidence!
Thunder is not simply the scientific result of lightning; it is the voice of God!
Our Psalter for this coming Sunday includes these verses:
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
Psalm 29:3-4
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
But we praise God that He has spoken to us of His presence far more clearly than through a thunderclap–for we have the Scriptures, and Christ has come and has made Him known!
Still, on Sunday we were reminded the Spirit IS among us. Let us take courage to move forward, praying for the voice of God in His Holy Word to be heard clearly both in our own hearts and in the hearts of those who have yet to hear His thunder in the Gospel of Jesus.
